DJ&A Diversity Scholarship

Challenge

DJ&A recognizes an industry-wide lack of diversity in the core professions we employ – engineering, surveying, environmental science, landscape architecture, and GIS.

Actions

DJ&A started a Diversity Scholarship Committee in 2020 to create guidelines and requirements for a scholarship program. The eligibility requirements state that the student must be currently enrolled or plan to enroll in a program providing education in a field DJ&A currently employs, and be a woman or minority as defined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Program, with preference given to residents of or students enrolled in a state where DJ&A has an office: Montana, Washington, Colorado, or South Dakota. Scholarship amounts will range from $1,000-$5,000 annually.

Outcomes

DJ&A is pleased with the outcome of its inaugural diversity scholarship program. Five students were awarded $1,000 each for their undergraduate studies last fall. The recipients, all qualified women and/or minority students enrolled in programs related to engineering, GIS, or environmental sciences, were selected based on the quality of their application essays, the strength of their letters of recommendation, and the excellence of their academic records. Out of the five recipients of the first round of scholarships awarded in 2021, two were Blackfeet Tribal Members enrolled at Salish Kootenai College. DJ&A has continued its Diversity Scholarship for 2022 and looks forward to awarding more students in the future.

DJ&A strives to create an inclusive environment where every employee feels like they belong. We acknowledge that women and minority-status individuals are underrepresented in our fields of engineering, surveying, environmental sciences, landscape architecture, and GIS. DJ&A is proud to support ongoing initiatives that promote equity through our Inclusion Committee, Diversity Scholarship, and an employee focused company culture.
