Diversity Speaker Series - "Diversity in Practice"

Challenge

It can be uncomfortable to have “real talk” about controversial topics, especially in a work setting. But with lines between personal and professional becoming increasingly blurred, it’s more important than ever to address and explore hard topics—and not just outside office walls. As part of our D&I Initiatives, quarterly, we host an outside speaker to educate the Lenox community on their unique experiences, provide education, and facilitate conversations. The goal was to engage with employees, and not only increase awareness but to start making uncomfortable conversations comfortable.

Actions

Our D&I speaker series, launched in 2020, gives employees a safe and supportive place to have candid discussions about important issues. Conversation starts with a keynote speaker followed by an open forum discussion facilitated by trained employee volunteers. Our speakers provide background on their experiences in life, and (where relevant) in business or industry. We’ve also hosted workshops, and implemented training sessions to expand on certain topics.

Outcomes

Our employees come together to have open and honest dialogue around important issues. Attendees have reported that they’ve come away with increased commitment to engaging different perspectives, increased levels of understanding and empathy across different communities and increased understanding of company resources. The team has provided feedback that this has helped them "walk in someone else's shoes" and appreciate their experience, background, challenges, and opportunities.
