Diversity Councils: Formation of Employee-Led, Management Supported DE&I Committee

Challenges

Pack Health employees and management recognized that the lessons learned during our 11-week Lived Experience lunch series with community and business leaders in the Summer of 2020 must be followed by specific strategy and action.

Actions

In the Summer of 2020, a group of employees drafted a Pack Health working guide to DE&I with specific recommendations to enhance company culture further. From this working guide, an employee-led, management supported DE&I committee was formed to refine the document and begin implementation of the recommendations.

Outcomes

The DE&I Committee held a kick-off meeting led by CEO, Mazi Rasulnia to share the updated working guide with the entire company and seek feedback on its contents; to launch a dedicated DE&I slack channel called, #bettertogether; and to announce an HR initiative in collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) - Forbes Magazine #1 Large Employer 2021 - for all Pack Health employees to complete a three-part bias training in Q4 of 2021 and Q1 of 2022. In addition, the DE&I Committee seeks to further the lessons learned from external business and community leaders by inviting Pack Health employees from diverse backgrounds to share their lived experiences at monthly lunch and learn presentations. As of September 1, 2021, the DE&I Committee hosted an after work happy hour at a local, Latinx-owned bar; sponsored a black-owned food truck to park in our lot for lunch service, and plans to continue hosting/sponsoring social events that support local, minority-owned businesses. The Committee, CEO, and Director of HR maintain regular communication to ensure progress and accountability throughout the company.

Quote

I am personally committed to ensuring that Pack Health’s DE&I initiatives are action oriented and tracked for progress. Our company culture and mission rely on data and measurements of progress and there is no space for lip service. We are bringing best practices across different sectors and different employees into the company's DNA, to continue to make this a place of a great working environment for everyone.
