Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Gala

Challenge

Dr. King recognized we can pass all the laws we want; we cannot legislate the heart.  Leaders  need to cultivate a mindset and heart that values diversity and inclusion.

Actions

Einstein, he said, “You cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it.  You must stand on a higher ground.”  The Sun poem speaks to the mind and the heart – Are you greater than the sun/that shines on everyone: Black, Brown, Yellow, Red and White/ the sun does not discriminate © Sara Ting.  This poem was the centerpiece of citywide multimedia public service campaign promoting equality in Boston and NYC in the mid-eighties. CBS Network TV has been airing an updated PSA of the Sun poem since August 2019.

The Sun poem inspired the founding of World Unity Inc. and our mission to promote equality, diversity and inclusion by raising self-awareness through the Sun poem and empowering individuals through the arts, education and innovative ideas.

For the past 23 years we have sponsored an annual diversity and inclusion leadership gala.  We bring leaders and organizations together to empower and inspire them with the Sun poem, the innovative initiatives it has inspired and a keynote speaker. View the initiatives at: worldunityinc.org

Outcomes

Over the years we’ve secured sponsorships from Walmart, CVS Health Merck, UPS, Bank of America, AECOM, Trillium Asset Management, Chestnut Hill Realty, Deloitte, Harvard, Babson College and many more.

Governor Baker and Lt. Governor Baker recognized the Sun poem to raise self-awareness to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Boston City council passed a resolution recognizing the power of the Sun poem to help us see our common humanity.

We’ve built a core group of supporters and reach new sponsors each year.  All guests receive a memento of the Sun poem and have access to the PSA.
