Diversifying NORC’s Board of Trustees

Challenge

NORC’s Board of Trustees was not very diverse for many years. In 2001 NORC’s Board consisted of 14 Trustees, all of them were white, and 11 of them were male.

Actions

We proactively worked to expand the board and to recruit and retain women and people of color to the board.  We used exhaustive networking methods, and in some cases advice from professional search organizations to do this.

Outcomes
  • NORC’s Board is now much more diverse
  • We now have 16 Trustees, 4 of whom are people of color (we need to continue to do better here and are working on it); 8 of the Trustees are female and 8 are male
