Discovering Implicit Bias

Challenge

Our organization noted the lack of diversity at our highest levels of leadership. We wanted to assure our leaders were aware of their own biases as we learn, grow, and broaden our appreciation for diversity in the workplace.

Actions

In July 2018, UMRC & Porter Hills partnered with Dr. Karen Brown, of the University of Michigan. Dr. Brown walked leaders through implicit bias. The intent of this workshop was to introduce implicit bias and increase self-awareness of leaders across the organization. During these workshops, participants were provided with on-line implicit bias tests so that they could become aware of their own bias.

Outcomes

What was learned was that all of us have bias, and that the most important thing is to be aware of them, and to challenge them in our interactions with others. We learned it is a lifelong journey.
