Challenge

Ensuring we are being intentional about support for individuals with disabilities with opportunities for employment and career growth at Maximus.

Actions

Our current outreach strategies to community partners was built upon a strategy implemented in 2017. We identified projects within MAXIM US with the largest staffing needs and focused on community partners in the area who could provide us with well-qualified, ready-to-work candidates within those areas. Research was conducted to identify vocational rehabilitation programs and community-based organizations that provided training and placement services to individuals with disabilities (IWDs). We built a list of organizations and staff members and invited them to attend a local "Open House which included a presentation about MAXIMUS, the local project, and the skills we are seeking for our high-volume hires. Project representatives were available to address specific questions posed by participating
agencies. We subsequently invited attendees to submit IWD candidates for specific recruitment days devoted to interviewing IWDs. We agreed to interview every single candidate referred directly by these community partners. These activities helped us to establish local partnerships that have also won us numerous accolades for being an employer of choice in the disability community in states such as Texas, Virginia, and Illinois, to name a few.

Outcomes

To see the fruits of our labor, consider that in FY 2017, the Disability Recruitment Team produced 250 sourced hires with disabilities. The team has remained the same size, yet numbers have increased exponentially, as listed below:
