Developing a Diversity and Inclusion Council

Challenge

To foster an inclusive workplace that respects and values the diversity of Beacon’s employees.  We recognized that we lacked a formal commitment to drive this initiative. Leveraging a diverse workforce would help drive positive results for our customers and to establish Beacon as a leader and innovator in the building products industry.

Actions

In 2020 we created a cross-functional Diversity and Inclusion Council comprised of employee volunteers who provide expertise, advice, and counsel to the Company on diversity and inclusion strategies.  In the first eight months the Council has developed a D&I Charter to state our purpose and mission, engaged with external partners to further guide our Council and identify opportunities, held Conversations of Understanding, conducted focus groups with leaders in underrepresented groups, established an intranet site and rolled out training and education on Diversity and Inclusion.

Outcomes

Our D&I journey has only just begun but we have already seen the efforts advancing throughout the company. The Council aims to attract, develop, and retain a workforce that is representative of the communities in which we work and live, and to foster a culture where sharing ideas is encouraged, and all voices can be heard. Since the council was formed, we’ve hired diverse talent in several leadership roles including our Board of Directors and Executive Committee. We are working to expand our external partnerships with organizations focused on gender and ethnic diversity to support our talent pipeline. We have also engaged with field and functional leadership to ensure shared ownership for authentic and sustainable outcomes. We are confident the D&I council will continue to grow and thrive over time and will help promote and embrace Diversity and Inclusion at Beacon.
