DEI Leadership Education

Challenge

Preparing CMAA members to be leaders within their organizations on DEI issues and strategies.

Actions

CMAA’s members were asking the association for specific, task-based guidance for implementing DEI initiatives within their organizations. In addition, CMAA recognized a need to develop DEI champions for the association. In response, the CMAA Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CODE) hosted a DEI Leadership Workshop for CMAA members. CMAA engaged JBA, a DEI education and consulting firm, to develop and lead the workshop. It was presented as three-hour, in person event in 2019, and virtually in 2020 and 2021 as a two-part event; each part lasting two hours. Content featured education on implicit bias, embedding DEI practices in the talent management life cycle, courageous conversations, and allyship. Participants ranged from early career professionals to organizational leaders. Initially organized by the executive office, all DEI education is now managed by the Professional Development team with regular DEI education added to the annual education program of webinars and in person learning. Going forward, the Committee is focusing its attention on education for national and regional volunteer leaders and staff on building inclusive cultures.

Outcomes

Participants were provided with the opportunity to share stories of experiencing implicit bias, to build a skill set for incorporating DEI into the talent management life cycle, and to learn more about the business case for inclusion.
