Deepening Our Investment

Challenge:

CauseMic was founded in 2013 by a multi-ethnic and gender-diverse team of leaders dedicated to amplifying the impact of our nonprofit and social impact startup clients. As the team has grown over the years, our value of diverse perspectives and experiences resulted in a tight-knit crew made up of folks from different ethnicities, genders, sexualities, religious beliefs, nationalities, physical abilities, and more.

As our growth continues, however, we believe success is not final, and are seeking additional ways to formally invest in ourselves and our clients to build a more just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive world.

Actions:

In 2022, senior leadership began to collaborate on new ways to intentionally engage our team and clients around DEI issues. This included identifying our existing representation and gaps, inviting transparent feedback from all employees and primary contractors, and having an open forum to discuss how the results should influence our future.

Once this initial phase is complete, we will begin looking toward defining ongoing investment through a variety of options, including training, certifications, and additional forums. Annual goals will be defined in our next annual strategic plan.

Outcomes:

We’ve appointed two employees to serve as DEI leads for the organization, and they’re guiding our management team through this process.

Employee survey results revealed an extremely diverse team for our size of organization. Now we’re pivoting toward deeper conversation about how we can best support employees so they can fully be themselves at work, and so their perspective can better shape the organizations we support.

In addition, efforts are underway to refine our recruiting and hiring processes to ensure our team can be made better by diverse experience.

I see an opportunity to formalize and strengthen our commitment to DEI by devoting resources and support to our employee-led process for continuous improvement. The impact of this work extends beyond just CauseMic to our local community and the mission-driven leaders and organizations we serve.
