Creating Gender Transition Guidelines

Challenge

After supporting one of our employees through gender transition while working at Ball, Ball Corporation recognized the need to create formal guidelines and resources to support individuals going through gender transition.

In order to better support Ball employees who are transgender, the Diversity & Inclusion team worked with our benefits, human resources and legal teams, as well as our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Allies (LGBTA) Ball Resource Group to develop robust guidelines and resources to support individuals going through gender transition in the workplace.

In addition, a summary of gender transition resources were created to help foster an understanding of transgender issues in the workplace and guidance on how to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals transitioning at Ball. The resources include:

  • Tips for Managers/Supervisors of an Employee Who is Transitioning
  • Tips for Co-workers of an Employee Who is Transitioning
  • Tips for Transgender Allies
  • Some Myths and Facts
  • Glossary of Terms
  • Additional Resources

We also worked with the medical director from Cigna—Ball’s medical plan and Employee Assistance Program administrator—to conduct robust training to the managers and team members of our transgender employees who are going through gender transition.    

At Ball, we are committed to ensuring that the needs of all of our employees are addressed as we focus on creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment. 

Outcomes

Ball’s Human Resources managers/representatives have been provided with these “Gender Transition Guidelines” to support any employee who is considering or decided to transition at Ball.  Now, the process of going through a gender transition at Ball is a little less daunting, as managers are better equipped with resources for supporting their teams throughout the process. Several of our employees who are transgender have expressed gratitude that Ball outwardly supports them in this way.

Our ability to make real progress with diversity and inclusion matters because it has a direct impact on our company’s success.  With different perspectives come different solutions to help our customers win in the marketplace.  We will continue to drive growth and economic value through our deliberate and intentional efforts to create a more diverse workforce and inclusive culture.
