Conversation Circles About Race

Challenge

Stress and anxiety was experienced in our country and by our team members because of the 2020 racial tensions.

Actions

UMRC & Porter Hills requested support from Dr. Thomas-Brown who facilitated “Conversation Circles about Race” to over 100 leaders and team members across our organization. This was an opportunity for team members to share their experiences about racism, ask questions and share concerns. The strategic team participated in a learning session with Dr. Brown, where we discussed the book, “White Fragility” and systemic racism that is sometimes unnoticed by us as we navigate our lives personally and professionally.

Outcomes

These sessions were followed by a resource packet that was sent out to all leaders and team members. Spaces were opened for others to share their feelings and concerns about racial tensions, experiences of racism and accepting their own racism and how it impacts their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors toward others.
