Combatting Digital Inequality

Challenge

Some of our urban school districts saw the digital divide become more pressing as the pandemic hit as several school districts in the Kansas City area had to switch gears to a virtual learning environment. A large number of students in KCMO school district are disproportionately students of color and who did not have access or ability to have access to both internet access and home computers.

Actions

DI donated gently used MacBooks, PCs to PCs for People. A KC nonprofit organization whose mission it is to ensure that everybody has a chance to get connected by combatting digital inequality. Our donations were delivered in mid-September, right in time for the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

Outcomes

DI CEO Tucker Trotter publicly stated, “With so much emphasis on virtual learning, children who don’t have access to personal computers and affordable Internet are at a disadvantage and often fall behind. If our donation can make a difference in one’s child life, we’ll be thrilled. We all need to do our part.”
