Celebration Week – The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

Challenge

Lifespan wanted to raise the level of cultural appreciation and sensitivity within its workforce and develop better and stronger ties with the community. As a result, we began the process with a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – his life, experiences and teachings.

The cultural awareness of Lifespan’s workforce is a product of cultural education and experience. One of the newest cultural programs targets the life and lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Current cultural awareness programs demonstrate the connection between King’s values and the healthcare industry, particularly the need for a strong partnership with our community.

Actions

A range of participatory programs were launched during the holiday week, highlighting non-violence, volunteerism, and Dr. King’s history/legacy.

Such events included:

  • Volunteer events, including working with children, the elderly, and those enduring socio-economic hardship.
  • Historical lectures, featuring insight into Dr. King’s thoughts and challenges
  • Artistic and musical expression
Outcomes

The MLK Celebration event has generated a stronger interest in community interaction, both as it impacts healthcare operations and as a platform for workforce volunteer activities.

These events enhance interactivity with our community partners, allowing our messages to be shared among and between the groups. Groups comes away with stronger knowledge of the programs and services each offers.

The mission of our organization is Delivering health with care, a philosophy that extends beyond medical treatment. It encompasses both the actions we take and the interpersonal interactions we have with our patients, visitors and employees. In living our shared values of compassion, accountability, respect and excellence, we embrace the culture and background of everyone with whom we interact. We appreciate and respect the language, culture, religion and all the characteristics that make us who we are. Inclusion is a fundamental tenet of our culture which translates into more favorable patient outcomes, greater patient satisfaction, and improved employee satisfaction.
