Caribbean Food Delights Race in the Workplace

Challenge

One of the things people often say about Caribbean Food Delights is that we have a very diverse workforce. Visitors who have been to our facility usually say we have the United Nations here. We have always strived to keep our workforce diversified. With so many different ethnicities at work, we are always making sure all employees understand each person’s culture and that they respect each other, regardless of race.

Actions

We educate our employees on all cultures whether through diversity training, or through company events, for example, introducing others to different foods at our employee appreciation barbeques, Christmas parties, or when ordering lunch for our employees from different ethnic restaurants. We don’t tolerate disrespect or bullying. Any employee that disrespects or bullies anyone is either disciplined or their employment is terminated. We want every employee here to feel respected regardless of their race and to have a safe working environment.

Outcomes

It’s a true testament about our company’s culture when some employees quit, they usually end up returning, begging for their job back. Visitors have told us that they see our employees and management are very close and treat each other like family. We are very family oriented and take care of each other. Based on some of our employees’ feedback, we go above and beyond for our employees by doing things that other companies may not do. We usually hear employees say something like, “Wow, my previous employers never did this for us. Thank you!” It makes us feel good knowing that our employees feel respected, appreciated and safe.

Quote

It is heartbreaking to see the unrest that is going on in our communities, while we struggle to recover from a pandemic that has blindsided us and forced us to adapt as quickly as possible to survive. The recent senseless, tragedy of George Floyd and many others has caused an explosion of years of anger and frustration over the abuse of power and authority, and it touches all of us in a way that we cannot sit still. No one should have to fear for their life and or be treated unjustly because of the color of their skin. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

At Royal Caribbean Bakery and Caribbean Food Delights, we are proud to have a diverse workforce and we will continue to be fair, inclusive and considerate to foster a culture in which our employees feel respected and comfortable in speaking up. I have encouraged our management team to reach out to all employees to see how everyone is feeling and how we can help our employees cope during this difficult time. As for our community, we are always here to help in whatever ways we can. We are here for you.
