Building D&I Awareness Among Our Associates

Challenge

Working in an industry that is historically perceived as being dominated by white males, SECURA saw an opportunity to build diversity and inclusion awareness among our associates.

Actions

In 2017, the Diversity & Inclusion team was developed by six dedicated associates with a mission and vision to promote awareness and influence continuous change towards a more diverse and inclusive culture in order to be a welcoming organization to our agents, policy holders, communities, and each other. Since its formation, the team has held several educational events, including partnering with local agencies to deliver unconscious bias training and facilitate diversity conversations.  We have brought in outside presenters to speak to our leadership group about various topics including transgender, physical disability, and African American business networking. In addition, on June 11, SECURA held its first all associate offsite event focused on giving a voice to those affected by sexual violence and challenging our associates to treat all with dignity and respect.

We continue to network with organizations that champion diversity and inclusion, and SECURA has joined the local Fox Cities Diversity Officers Collaborative.

Future actions include:

  • Implementation of Associate Resource Groups
  • Educational sessions on D&I topics
  • Promote associate involvement (time, talent, treasure) with community groups or event
  • Regular internal communications to influence shifts in behavior and thought in hopes to build a more inclusive environment
Outcomes

We have grown to a team of 14 passionate associates leading our D&I initiative. We published several internal communications providing education on awareness, inclusion, and highlighting resources available to the public and created a resource library, available online and in print, made available to all associates.
