Board Engagement at Sensata

Challenge

Ensure Board awareness, involvement, and championship in Sensata’s DEI journey.

We embarked on a more purposeful approach to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) in the last two years in response to increased global awareness and activism around racial equity issues. In 2020, Sensata’s first Black/African Employee Resource Group partnered with the Sensata Foundation, our own 501.c.3 focused on making impacts in communities where Sensata employees live and work, resulting in a donation of almost $20,000, which included employee donations and an equal match from the Foundation.

Actions

Leverage speaking engagement opportunity with a virtual fireside chat with Daniel L. Black, Sensata Board member, sponsored by our Black Employee Network (BEN), to increase connection between the Board and our DEI programming as well as global employee awareness of BEN who is aiming to increase membership.

The Black Employee Network (BEN), our global ERG that supports employees of Black/African heritage, hosted “Careers and Diversity: A Conversation with Daniel L. Black,” a live virtual event on February 16, 2022. Daniel L. Black is currently Managing Partner at The Wicks Group, a private equity firm that invests in technology-enabled information companies. He has served as a Sensata Board Member since January 2021. His career includes executive level positions in investment banking and private equity in New York and Los Angeles at The Bank of New York, where he also served as Managing Director and Co-Head of Merchant Banking at BNY Capital Markets, Inc., a subsidiary. Mr. Black received his A.B. in Government from Dartmouth College.

Outcomes

Positive feedback from Mr. Black and global attendees of the event who truly enjoyed the opportunity to hear from his experience.

The event, which was open to Sensata employees at all locations globally, featured a moderated discussion with Daniel L. Black, covering topics related to career development and diversity and inclusion – including, but not limited to, building a diverse and inclusive workplace, advice for underrepresented employees who want to advance their careers and advocating for minorities. George Verras, SVP and Chief Technology Officer, serves as BEN’s Executive Sponsor, and kicked off the event with opening remarks. This engagement with one of Sensata’s Board members was the first of its kind and was equally as fulfilling for Team Sensata and Mr. Black. We also regularly report out to our Board on our DEI programming, metrics, and results.
