ASHP forms Internal Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Challenge

ASHP seeks to improve inclusion in the workplace.

Actions

The committee is charged with taking inventory of ASHP’s internal efforts in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a focus around the following goals:

  • Provide ongoing feedback to the Senior Leadership Team on the topic of diversity, equity, and inclusion, specifically around the Black Lives Matter Movement.
  • Provide input in helping ASHP provide diversity, equity, and inclusion education and learning opportunities to its staff.
  • Make recommendations on organizational practices and policies on diversity, equity, and inclusion

The committee began its work in late July, 2020 and will conclude by January 2021. While we know our efforts won’t end in January on this topic, part of the committee’s work will be how we carry the work ahead after January.

Outcomes

The committee is half-way through its work and focusing on forming recommendations to implement to the organization including:

  • Establish Diversity and Inclusion Training
  • Foster career progression with mentorship from different divisions
  • Broaden recruitment opportunities to encourage diversity in hiring, from fellows to senior-level positions
  • Acknowledgment of heritage months and culturally relevant holidays
  • Review/update existing policies to recognize diversity, equity and inclusion as association priority
