Affinity Groups & Networks at KnowBe4

Challenge

In early 2020, we created five Employee Resource Groups (ERG's) to give individuals a safe space to network and socialize, work on professional development, and to raise awareness to relevant issues. We realized the importance of fostering a diverse, inclusive workplace, and created these groups as a stepping stone to reaching that potential. These groups focus on community outreach, education, and awareness of current-day issues. Many members of these groups have shared characteristics, while other members serve as allies to help promote their mission.

During the process to create and onboard these groups we were faced with the real challenge of which groups to on board first and how that would be received by our staff. We worked closely with the groups that were ready to kick things off when we unveiled the concept and have continued to provide support for groups who are now looking to more formally come together as an ERG.

Actions

After identifying the groups of employees who wanted to lead each of the ERGs we helped them craft rules of engagement and provided them with budgetary, and logistics support to ensure their initiatives were not only successful but they were able to maintain their focus on their primary roles.

Outcomes

We currently have 5 ERGs with more on the way. Our ERGs have participated in multiple philanthropic and service opportunities, in addition to numerous events and forums to increase sense of belonging amongst members. They have worked hard to raise awareness of their specific groups, not only within the KnowBe4 workspace, but within the local community, and have worked as a guiding force to increase the numbers of our employee population who identify with one of their groups.
