A critical piece of Harvard Pilgrim's Inclusion Initiative is to expand partnerships with a diverse range of suppliers, and we recognize the importance of diverse/minority suppliers to the region's economic vitality. We acknowledge the challenges diverse/minority suppliers encounter and strive to identify suppliers that can provide innovative solutions, competitive pricing and high-quality goods and services. When identifying improvement for internal processes, we realized that there was a decentralized process for temporary staffing. The program consisted of too many suppliers while still missing agencies providing staffing for highly specialized areas, high levels of invoices and purchase orders, and was not inclusive of Human Resources and their people management initiatives.
We sourced for a minority owned supplier that could provide a vendor management system. Our need was to centralize temporary staffing requests, candidates, contracts, timecards and invoices. We also wanted to ensure that the process was inclusive of Human Resources and provided tracking, administrative support, and had a mix of suppliers that covered all of Harvard Pilgrim’s needs.
In 2016 the team chose WorkSpend Inc as our temporary workforce management partner. Workspend is an MBE and has helped implement the temporary staffing program within Harvard Pilgrim. They partnered with us in the selection of staffing agencies that can provide candidates for all areas, trained our hiring managers, transferred current temporary staff to the new system, streamlined timecards and our invoicing process while collaborating with Human Resources.
While diversity efforts have been around for some time, ours is unique because it is a company-wide, comprehensive commitment to put inclusion at the forefront of everything we do.
